Christian social thought has had a considerable influence on the design of the European nations. Both Protestants and Catholics have made great contributions to the social and economic structure of their respective nations over the last century. The developments leading to further European integration made Christians conscious that they also had to come in contact on a European level. From March 20- 22, 1997, persons within the Christian social tradition met in Brussels on a three-day conference in the buildings of the European Parliament. This meeting was not only historic because of its international scale, but also because people from labour unions, employer’s organisations, universities, churches and political parties met together.
